Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)

ASTM E 1252 / IPC-TM-650 2.3.39

FTIR analysis is a spectroscopic technique that involves the study of molecular vibrations.  The analysis results provide principally qualitative, but also limited quantitative, information regarding the chemical composition and state of the material evaluated.  FTIR produces a unique spectrum, which is comparable to the fingerprint of the material.  It is the principal analytical technique used to qualitatively identify organic materials.

Main Uses of FTIR

  • Polymer identification
  • Determination of chain branching and end-groups
  • Determination of the presence of major organic additives and fillers
  • Assessment of polymer degradation
  • Contamination analysis (Identification of organic contaminants)

Our FTIR spectrometer when coupled with the Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) and Diffuse Reflectance accessories allow the infrared analysis of the broadest range of sample types: Liquid, paste, gel, viscous smear, sheet, film, solid, and powder samples.
